It’s not as hard as you think — A Simply Piano Review.

My background with piano.

Me, Circa 2005

When I was 8 years old my parents enrolled me in piano lessons. At the time I had zero interest in learning to play the piano, I dreaded going to the lessons, and I absolutely hated practicing. I was an active child and was far more interested in running around the house, playing with my neighbors, and making up dances with my cousins. After two years of forced lessons, I was able to convince my parents to let me quit. I forgot every bit of knowledge I had gained over the years and never looked back — until well, now.

How did I learn to play the piano?

At first, I went to YouTube much as I do with everything I want to learn. I found some great videos that taught me to play some tunes and songs. While I enjoyed those videos I was primarily using my right hand to play all the notes. I wanted to utilize both my hands and play a song properly. I continued watching tutorial after tutorial and finally gave in to all the Simply Piano ads that were being served to me. I didn’t know what to expect but, to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Simply Piano is how I learned how to play the piano.

What’s so great about Simply Piano?

Simply Piano has several features that make learning to play the piano an achievable task. The most helpful and powerful feature is the app’s ability to detect and identify the exact notes you are playing. This can be done in two ways.

  • The first way (which can be a little inaccurate) is by allowing the app access to your device’s microphone.
  • The second way (which is 100% accurate) is by getting a MIDI cable and connecting your keyboard to your device.

This feature is powerful because you are able to see which keys you’ve missed and run it back until you’ve played all the notes correctly. In a way this “gameifys” the learning process, which makes it a lot more fun and appealing to get back on the app — even as an adult.

Simply Piano is beginner-friendly, interactive, and thorough. The courses teach you how to read notes as well as which fingers to use for each key. This is very helpful especially when you have to move your hand around the keyboard.

There exists a wide variety of songs from different genres at varying levels of difficulty. Learning to play songs you actually enjoy is game-changing. When I was younger and taking lessons with an instructor I had absolutely no say as to which songs I’d be playing. There is a great deal of value in having the freedom to decide which songs you are going to learn and master. If you can’t find a song you’re looking for you can request it. It’s highly possible that the song you’ve requested be added to the library since new songs are added on a regular basis.

The app is mostly bug-free, runs smoothly and is updated frequently.

If you are looking to learn how to play the piano, don’t be afraid. Simply Piano has found a system that just works.
